A haunted attraction runs on an agreement: the danger feels real, but everybody eventually gets to go home. Slayground builds its premise around that agreement collapsing.

A24’s film follows scare actor “Metal Mike” Graves, who regains consciousness at his workplace to find his fellow employees dead. His memories offer no explanation. With authorities searching for him across the state, finding answers could mean discovering his own involvement.

The Krypt’s take

The hook is especially nasty for anyone who loves walking through haunts. A mask normally tells you who is performing. Here, a man who makes his living pretending to be dangerous may have no way to establish where the performance ended.

That uncertainty gives the premise somewhere interesting to go. Escaping a threat is one problem; trying to determine whether you are the threat is another. We’re curious to see how long the film keeps those possibilities in play. This is a premise reaction, rather than a review of the finished movie.

When does Slayground open?
